In my experience, direct venting in oil is only a corporate dream that will turn into a nightmare for both you and your heating contractor; it should be avoided at all costs. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) in oil-fired appllications I'd say: masonry chimney 10, metal chimney 7.5, power venter 1, direct vent 0. Hope this helps.
